A prominent Toronto collector and long-time client of Iron Gate. Wines were purchased from the winery on release, shipped directly to professional storage and never touched until now. An incredible offering of American wine with excellent provenance.
The score for 1979 Krug Vintage Brut Champagne is 95 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Tasted blind at David Wainwright’s 40th bacchanal in Brighton. A golden/green hue with a very fine, almost languid mousse. The bouquet is fresh and succinct with almond, hazelnut, a touch of undergrowth and a hint of wet straw that turns more honeyed with aeration. Just a hint of heather developing alongside and then after 20 minutes that biscuit note beginning to take over. The palate is very elegant with a citrus edge on the entry, green lemon, orange-blossom, hazelnut again with exquisite balance and poise. Very understated on the finish, lovely sense of mineralite although to be honest, I cannot see this getting any better at 30-years of age. Having said that, it will remain on its drinking plateau for a good few years.
