A spirits aficionado who discovered Scotch when he was in the military. He began his collection in the 80's and at the same time began looking for more exotic Scotch tastings. He researched all the distillery locations in Scotland and became particularly interested in "Silent Stills", along with anything else that caught his eye. He amassed 1100 bottles, sourced from the LCBO, independent distributors in Canada and USA, independent bottlers and distilleries in Scotland, and retailers in the USA. He would have “Whiskey Weekends” at his country house and invite an eclectic mix of drinkers to sample any whiskey they desired which were all displayed in my “Whiskey Room”, which over the years became a coveted ticket. It is a change in lifestyle that is bringing these spirits to auction.
The Brora distillery was built in 1819 and known as "Clynelish" until the opening of the Clynelish Distillery in 1968, whereupon the name was changed to "Brora". Between May 1969 and July 1973, Brora produced a heavily peated whisky to supply for blending to cover a shortage of Islay whisky caused by a drought in that region. Most of the whisky produced as Brora after 1973 is in the lightly peated Highland style. In early 1983, production at Brora was stopped and the distillery was mothballed. This bottle of Brora 18-year-old, bottled for the Old Malt Cask range by Douglas Laing & co. Distilled in March 1981 and bottled in June 1999 at 50% ABV.
