1983 Chateau Ausone St Emilion Grand Cru has following scores - CellarTracker 92, Wine Spectator 90. Along with Chateau Cheval Blanc, Chateau Ausone is only other Saint-Emilion producer to be bestowed with the Premier Grand Cru Classe Classification. Alain Vauthier came on board at the Chateau in the mid 70's and brought an eye for detail and zeal for work across the whole property, quickly restoring quality and an intensely focused direction that continue to this day, making Ausone a highly collectable proposition year in year out. Typically a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, Ausone is a wine of extreme elegance and purity which come from one of the smallest estates, having just 7.3 hectares of vines. When young, Château Ausone's wines have a light colour and fairly hard tannins but these great wines are made to have an exceptional capacity to age and will only soften after 15 or 20 years in the cellar, when they reveal a wonderful aromatic bouquet of spices, mocha, toast and minerals. 1983 has aged gracefully, having settled into itself losing the hard tannic edge and unfurling to be an exceptional wine.
