A collector since university, more than 30 years ago, this consignor was on his school’s wine tasting team in England and was fortunate to have access to the university’s cellars to taste and learn about fine wines. He developed an appreciation for age worthy wines and began to purchase and carefully store them. Later in life he became friends with winemakers in the old and new world regions and was able to purchase highly allocated wines through them. He also buys wine from agents and the LCBO and occasionally from auction and all bottles go directly to storage at Iron Gate.
Producer Notes for 1985 Maison Leroy Beaune Perrieres - The legendary Leroy house in Auxey-Duresses was created by François Leroy in 1868. At the beginning of the following century, Henri Leroy contributed greatly to the reputation of the wines, then his daughter, Lalou Bize-Leroy took over in 1971. In addition to the trading house in question here, this icon of Burgundy became known by buying the Charles Noëllat estate to create his own estate. This unique character also co-managed the Romanée-Conti estate until the end of the 1980s. The wines of the Leroy house remain of exemplary quality. They are undoubtedly the greatest trading wines in Burgundy. The grapes are very meticulously selected, they must come from at least sustainable agriculture. The vinification and aging are as careful as at the estate to produce exceptional wines. Lalou Bize-Leroy's wines are among the noblest and purest that Burgundy has to offer. A fact that is also reflected in the merchant wines for which she has always sought out the best plots and the best grapes. Les Perrières is a 1er cru classified climat located in the far north of Beaune, and which extends over 3.20 hectares in total, at the top of the hillside. It takes its name from the old stone quarry that was once installed there, and retains a very stony soil, made of marl and limestone. The Pinot Noirs that were born there were meticulously vinified, then bottled, barrel by barrel, without filtration. An act that gave birth to a perfectly balanced wine, which has managed to preserve its fruit and develop notes of earth and undergrowth. Deep and well structured by silky tannins, it leaves a fresh sensation in the mouth that persists in the finish marked by minerality.
