A prominent Toronto collector and long-time client of Iron Gate. Wines were purchased from the winery on release, shipped directly to professional storage and never touched until now. An incredible offering of American wine with excellent provenance.
The score for 1988 Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes Premier Cru Superieur is 96 points from Vinous and the tasting note - The 1988 d’Yquem is almost identical to the bottle I tasted in 2016. This is almost Barsac-like in style on the nose with scents of barley sugar, complemented by marmalade and mandarin, fresh and vibrant with a palpable sense of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous texture but it is not, and has never been, as unctuous as either the 1989 or 1990. However, what the 1988 does possess is a surfeit of vitality and tension. There are layers of blood orange, quince and marmalade towards the finish that as the aromatics suggest, comes across as quite Barsac in style. Superb. The score for 1988 Chateau Climens Barsac Premier Cru is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 1988 reveals layer upon layer of honeyed pineapple-and orange-scented and -flavored fruit, vibrant acidity, high levels of botrytis, and a fabulously long, yet well-focused finish. It is a great wine. The score for 1988 Chateau Rieussec Sauternes Premier Cru is 95 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - It has an unerringly youthful bouquet with vibrant citrus fruit, wild honey, mandarin and mineral scents, a bouquet that seems to have electricity flowing through it. The same can be said for the palate that is full of tension and vigor, almost clinical in terms of focus with alluring viscosity and wonderful length. This bowled me over with its charm and breeding. Hunt a bottle down and share with your best friends—this is a superlative Rieussec, one of the best produced.
