This consignor, located in Alberta, became interested in wine and port over 20yrs ago as he was getting into the cigar business. He was fascinated by the similarities between cigars and wine such as terroir, blending and aging. He began to buy wine for cigar pairing events which led him to collecting. He had assistance from a friend who could not drink but had a keen interest in vintage port. All bottles were purchased at retail wine shops around Edmonton. A large portion came from DeVine Wines and Spirits. He stored the collection in a walk-in humidor in the basement of his cigar shop. The temperature and humidity were controlled by greenhouse monitors.
The score for 1990 Dow's Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - I thought this was a staggering example of port. Dow's style tends to be more backward, but this opaque black/purple-colored wine reveals a huge, powerful, intense palate, with gobs of flesh and viscous fruit. There is considerable tannin in the finish. It is a massive port with no indication of excessive alcohol in the finish. A magnificent young, dry-styled vintage port that just goes on and on in the mouth, it should last for 20-30 years. The single Quinta ports are just as spectacular as any vintage port I tasted from 1983 or 1985.
