His interest in wine was first sparked by his older brother’s passion for French wines, leading him to join the Opimian Society and begin expanding his own knowledge. While working full-time in Vancouver, he took a weekend job at a retail wine store, where his understanding of wine deepened. A defining moment came with the release of the 1990 Château Margaux—an extraordinary wine that left a lasting impression and solidified his love for Bordeaux. After relocating to Calgary, he invested in a 400-bottle wine fridge and began thoughtfully building his collection through purchases from local retailers, LCBO, and the SAQ, with one exception via a Bordeaux futures offering. With shifting priorities, a declining palate, and a desire to see his wines enjoyed by fellow enthusiasts, he has decided to offer a portion of his collection for sale.
1990 Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana from this lot has the following scores - Wine Spectator 95 points, The Wine Advocate 94 points, CellarTracker 93 points. This is the tasting note for 1990 Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana from Robert Parker - The 1990 Solaia is slightly more concentrated than the 1990 Tignanello, with a saturated purple color, and a classic, international nose of cassis, lead pencil, vanillin, and smoke. It is gorgeously rich, with a fat, unctuous texture, and a long, highly extracted finish. Well-balanced and already delicious, it remains unevolved and is potentially a 12-20 year wine. In the context of recent Solaias, I would rate it a worthy competitor to the other-worldly 1985. It is certainly much more opulent, with sweeter, jammier, richer fruit than the 1988 (most recently rated 88 points). 1990 Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC from this lot has the following scores - Wine Spectator 96 points, Vinous 94 points. This is the tasting note for 1990 Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC from Robert Parker - Another super effort from this producer, Ludvico Antinori's 1990 Ornellaia is a worthy successor to the super 1988. Fat, supple, and loaded with black-cherry and curranty fruit, and a dash of vanillin from new oak barrels, this full-bodied, velvety-textured, opulent wine should drink well for 10-12 years. As good as the Ornellaia is, it is hard to imagine how terrific the single vineyard offering Ornellaia called Masseto must be in 1990. Several of my Italian friends claim it is absolutely brilliant.
