Growing up in Montreal, this consignor’s parents exposed him to wine as a teenager. Once he was working on Bay Street his mentor introduced him to Toronto’s best wine lists. While on vacation in Bordeaux in 1990 he enjoyed a bottle of Chateau Meyney at a local restaurant and Bordeaux became his wine of choice. On that same trip he purchased as many bottles as possible of 1989 (his daughter’s birth year) and 1990 directly from the vineyards. A close acquaintance owned Lifford and, with Robert Parker as his guide, he purchased wine through them and began collecting. He had a 1200 bottle professional cellar built in his home and wines were stored there upon acquisition.
The tasting note for 1994 Chateau Leoville Las Cases St Julien is from Robert Parker and the score is 93 - Michel Delon, a great man, is the consummate proprietor, meticulously administering this vast estate spread out along the St.-Julien/Pauillac border, separated from Latour's finest vineyard by a mere ten feet. The 1993-95 vintages from Delon are brilliant wines. Leoville-Las-Cases remains one of the irrefutable reference points for high class Bordeaux. One of the more massive Medocs of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored wine exhibits fabulous richness and volume in the mouth. Layers of pure black-cherry and cassis fruit are intermixed with stony, mineral-like scents, as well as high quality toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied, with a sweet, rich entry, this wine possesses plenty of tannin, yet fabulous extract and length. Leoville-Las-Cases is one of the half-dozen great wines of the Medoc in 1994.
