The consignor was introduced to wine by friends and colleagues in the early 1990s, just as Alberta privatized alcohol sales. His collecting began around 1994, sparked by the purchase of 1988 Château Margaux—his most expensive bottle at the time. Over the past 30+ years, he has purchased wines through the SAQ, auctions, private imports, and cellars. His temperature-controlled home cellar was built in the early '90s and has housed his collection from the very beginning, maintaining optimal storage conditions throughout.
1994 Opus One Napa Valley from this lot has the following scores - Vinous 96 points, Decanter 95 points. This is the tasting note for 1994 Opus One Napa Valley from Robert Parker - This is an impressive effort from Opus One. The wine, a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Malbec, possesses a dark ruby/purple color, followed by a generous, complex nose of lead pencil, toasty oak, violets, and black currants. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, generous, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a stunningly proportioned, rich, intense finish. The influence of 18 months in new French oak casks gives the wine a subtle oaky note in addition to giving it excellent delineation. Because of the wine's softness and generosity, it can be drunk now as well as over the next 18-20 years.
