On a trip to Paris, a leather-bound Champagne list organized by grape, vineyard, and year sparked the consignors’ interest in wine. They began attending tastings held by restaurants, agents, and the LCBO, buying the best from these events, including the 1985 and 1996 Krugs purchased directly during a presentation by Remy Krug in Toronto. They collected heavily from the mid-1990s to mid-2000s, focusing on wines they tasted personally or that were highly rated by Robert Parker. The collection contains no private auction or individual purchases; every bottle was sourced through the LCBO, agents, or specialty shops during their travels. Prior to auction, all wines were stored in temperature and moisture-controlled fridges. A high-end restaurant recently opened several of their bottles, noting the impressive quality and condition despite long-term storage.
1996 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Champagne from this lot has the following scores - Vinous 95 points, The Wine Advocate 95 points, Bob Campbell 95 points, Wine Spectator 93 points, John Gilman's View from the Cellar 93 points, Wine Enthusiast 93 points, John Kapon Vintage Tastings 93 points, John Kapon - Vintage Tastings 93 points. This is the tasting note for 1996 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Champagne from Robert Parker - Tightly-packed with notes of citrus oil, orange rind, white peach, honeysuckle, and brioche, the medium to full-bodied 1996 La Grande Dame Brut should age well for 15-20 years. Crisp, fresh, and backward, it is another brilliant example from the exquisite 1996 vintage. 1996 Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque Brut from this lot has the following scores - Wine Enthusiast 93 points, Vinous 92 points, Wine Spectator 92 points, Decanter 92 points, CellarTracker 91 points. This is the tasting note for 1996 Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque Brut from Wine Enthusiast - The famous Belle Epoque bottle design is based on a 1902 bottle of Emile Gallé. Today's blend of this prestige cuvée is a fine balance between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, crisp and fresh in a ripe, mature aperitif style. It is lively but complex, showing some toasty flavors to complement the rich, ripe green fruit tastes. Great balance and elegace.
