This consignor was in the retail wine and agency business as the owner of The Wine Shop in Calgary, the first license holder from Alberta’s privatization initiative in the 1980s. He bought the business from a friend and was seduced by the idea of combining his love of travel and food with finding wine producers to represent and import. Involvement in the industry led to him becoming an enthusiastic collect in 1995. His collection has always been stored in a climate-controlled wine room built in his home, with a capacity of 1500 bottles.
The tasting note for 1997 Petrus Pomerol is from Robert Parker and the score is 92 - Proprietor Christian Moueix's 1996s have turned out well in the bottle. The 1996 Petrus is a big, monolithic, foursquare wine with an impressively opaque purple color, and sweet berry fruit intermixed with earth, pain grille, and coffee scents. Full-bodied and muscular, with high levels of tannin, and a backward style, this wine (less than 50% of the production was bottled as Petrus) will require patience. It is a mammoth example.
