This consignor was in the retail wine and agency business as the owner of The Wine Shop in Calgary, the first license holder from Alberta’s privatization initiative in the 1980s. He bought the business from a friend and was seduced by the idea of combining his love of travel and food with finding wine producers to represent and import. Involvement in the industry led to him becoming an enthusiastic collect in 1995. His collection has always been stored in a climate-controlled wine room built in his home, with a capacity of 1500 bottles.
The score for 1999 Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz Eden Valley is 97 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Deep garnet-purple in color, the 1999 Hill of Grace presents fragrant notes of warm blackberries and black cherries with hints of menthol, dried thyme and sage, licorice, dark chocolate and black olives. Full-bodied, rich and powerful, it has firm, chewy tannins, crisp acid and a long finish. It is still very youthful in the mouth with lots of flavor layers. It is drinking well now and should continue to cellar through 2035+.
