A collector since university, more than 30 years ago, this consignor was on his school’s wine tasting team in England and was fortunate to have access to the university’s cellars to taste and learn about fine wines. He developed an appreciation for age worthy wines and began to purchase and carefully store them. Later in life he became friends with winemakers in old and new world regions and was able to purchase highly allocated wines through them. He also buys wine from agents and the LCBO and occasionally from auction and all bottles go directly to storage at Iron Gate.
The tasting note for 2003 Black Hills Estate Winery Nota Bene is from Anthony Gismondi - The latest Nota Bene a 46/34/20/ cabernet sauvignon / merlot / cabernet franc is much cleaner than past versions on the nose and palate but the flavour profile remains smoky, roasted bell pepper with earthy, tobacco, olive, coffee/resin notes. It is dry round and smooth on entry with supple tannins (yeah) followed by spicy, vanilla, resiny, peppery, black olive flavours laced with tobacco leaf, mineral and licorice flavours. The finish is warm. It needs another 2-4 years to fully develop and hopefully reveal more fruit tones. The tasting note for 2004 Black Hills Estate Winery Nota Bene is from Anthony Gismondi - This note comes from a 17-wine vertical tasting held in Osoyoos, British Columbia on Saturday September 30. Each of the bottles tasted were in good physical condition although clearly some of the older, formative years are now past their best. Working through 17 vintages of Nota Bene makes it clear that better viticulture, older grapes vines, new facilities and better wine knowledge has improved the all-round quality of the current Nota Bene labels when compared to its humbler beginnings. One of the lighter wines in the tasting it has evolved like many before it into a round soft, sweetish red that is ready to drink. The alcohol is carrying it at this point but it is enjoyable to drink. Lacks complexity but its one of the first to show refinement in structure and length. The 2004 is a 46/36/18 blend of cabernet sauvignon / merlot and cabernet franc. Winemaker Senka Tennant.
