An Ontario based collector who spent summers during university as a French/English translator for wine tours in the Rhone Valley. He started collecting, slowly, 25 years ago but his interest piqued after he began to attend the LCBO vintage dinners, notably one with Chateau de Beaucastel’s Thomas Perrin. Most of his wine was purchased through the LCBO and stored at his cottage in a climate-controlled cellar.
The score for 2004 Convento San Francisco Ribera Del Duero is 95 from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2004 Seleccion Especial is a similar blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Merlot from the lowest yielding parcels on the estate. It was aged for 19 months in mostly new French oak. Inky purple-hued, the complex bouquet jumps from the glass. Notes of wood smoke, vanilla, toast, violets, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur are enticing and lead to an opulent, intense, deep, and super-sweet wine with incipient complexity. Well-balanced, long, and complete, it will unfurl in the cellar over the next 8-10 years and drink well through 2040. Javier Garcia is owner/winemaker of this small estate. Garcia for several years was Peter Sisseck’s right hand man at Hacienda Monasterio. The estate’s vines range in age from 86-102 years.
