A collector since university, more than 30 years ago, this consignor was on his school’s wine tasting team in England and was fortunate to have access to the university’s cellars to taste and learn about fine wines. He developed an appreciation for age worthy wines and began to purchase and carefully store them. Later in life he became friends with winemakers in old and new world regions and was able to purchase highly allocated wines through them. He also buys wine from agents and the LCBO and occasionally from auction and all bottles go directly to storage at Iron Gate.
The rating for 2006 Mission Hill Oculus is 91 points from Anthony Gismondi and the tasting note - Oculus continues down the softer rounder richer path but slowly. Very peppery, spicy, minty nose with black olive, leather, mineral, liquorice and blackberry notes sprinkled with coffee, cassis, carrot top and vanilla aromas. The attack is dry and round with fairly tight tannins but with finesse. More black cherry fruit spiked with peppery, liquorice, smoky flavours with coffee, resin, tobacco, leather black olive and herbal notes in the finish. This has a solid future but like previous editions it will need 3-5 years to soften up and develop further. It needs a little less Medoc character and a little more Pomerol.
The rating for 2005 Mission Hill Oculus is 91 points from Anthony Gismondi and the tasting note - The latest Oculus continues down the path of richer, softer textures while eliminating almost all green aspects. We like the '05 and its spicy, peppery, chocolate nose laced with vanilla, black olive, tobacco leaf, coriander, cassis and cherry aromas. The palate is dry and elegant, and yes young and tight but in time this will dissipate. More cedar, tobacco leaf, cassis, orange peel, vanilla, coffee, green olive and licorice flavours mark the palate with a bit of cardamom and coriander on the finish. There is fine finesse in what is the best Oculus yet. Cellar for 3-5 years and beyond for best results.
