This consignor was in the retail wine and agency business as the owner of The Wine Shop in Calgary, the first license holder from Alberta’s privatization initiative in the 1980s. He bought the business from a friend and was seduced by the idea of combining his love of travel and food with finding wine producers to represent and import. Involvement in the industry led to him becoming an enthusiastic collect in 1995. His collection has always been stored in a climate-controlled wine room built in his home, with a capacity of 1500 bottles.
The tasting note for 2005 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is from Robert Parker and the score is 98 - Technical Director/Chief Winemaker Philippe Dhalluin said this was a special year for him, because he considers it his first great vintage—he started in 2004. Deep garnet with hint of brick, the 2005 Mouton Rothschild is evolving into unabashed, flamboyant notes of Christmas cake, plum preserves, chocolate-covered cherries, eucalyptus and crème de cassis with beautifully fragrant wafts of potpourri, incense, Indian spices and cigar box. Full-bodied, the palate performs vinous pirouettes with dazzling exotic spice, floral and earthy nuances, framed by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced.
