A Toronto-based consignor whose interest in wine was ignited during a year-and-a-half stint in Italy in his mid-twenties. Living just across from a wine shop in the heart of Rome's historic center, he had easy access to affordable wines from various Italian regions, as well as from other parts of Europe. Upon returning to Canada, he started buying wine with a more educated palate, setting aside a bottle or two whenever he could afford it, "for later." This habit eventually led to the creation of a small wine cellar at home, and a few years later, a professional storage space for his expanding collection. He became a member of the Fine Wine Reserve in 2006, where he stored all his new bottles. Most of his collection comes from the LCBO, with a few sourced from the AGLC. These days, he drinks less and has decided to downsize his collection through auction.
The rating for 2006 Chateau Leoville Poyferre St Julien is 92 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Léoville Poyferré has one of the most harmonious and complete bouquets from Saint Julien - very well-defined blackberry, briary and chalky scents, real focus and delivery here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannin matched with well-judged acidity. Like the 2006 Léoville-Barton, it is stubborn and backward, but there is clearly harmony and focus on the finish, the new oak deftly assimilated in the fabric of the wine. This is a lovely wine from Didier Cuvelier.
