This consignor’s passion for Scotch whisky was sparked nearly 40 years ago during a trip to Scotland for his sister’s wedding. While visiting a centuries-old pub, he discovered that the new owner was clearing out old inventory, offering drams from a ceiling-beam display of vintage bottles for just a single pound each. Unaware of their true worth, the publican served rare expressions dating back to the 1930s—including remarkable bottles from Macallan. After five days of sampling some of the finest whiskies ever produced, a lifelong pursuit of collecting was born. Upon returning a few years later, he found the historic bottles were gone, confirming just how fortunate that initial encounter had been. Over the decades, he built an extraordinary collection of more than 900 mostly unique bottles. His early acquisitions were gathered during travels to Scotland, far-flung trips as distant as New Zealand, and through various auctions. His collection grew further through his role as a director of the West Coast Whisky Society, where he has been a member since 2005, unlocking access to exclusive offerings and rare finds. As his palate evolved, he developed a deep appreciation for peated Islay whiskies, with Ardbeg becoming a central focus. The collection ultimately served as the centerpiece of his home offices in both British Columbia and Arizona, forming a personal shrine to the liquid history he had assembled. Now, having finally run out of physical space, he is offering these bottles to the next generation of enthusiasts. While the physical spirits move on to new stewards, he retains the indelible memories, stories, and friendships gathered over a lifetime of collecting.
