This consignor spent nine years in California where he developed a deep appreciation for their wines. His collecting began modestly in the 1980s while living there, but it wasn’t until he returned to Calgary in the late 90s that he took a more structured approach to acquiring wine. Every bottle of Bordeaux in his consignment was purchased En Primeur through trusted Calgary importers, Nobilis Wines and Richmond Hill Wines, and had remained in his possession since delivery. His collection was meticulously stored in a custom-built, temperature-controlled cellar, designed to house 1,500 bottles with touchpad security. For years, the wines rested in their original wooden crates before he began to enjoy them. His passion for French wines led him to purchase Bordeaux En Primeur annually since 2005, but over time, his collection became heavily weighted toward the region. Recognizing the need for balance, he turned to Irongate to help diversify his holdings.

Whoa—the nose explodes with a vast array of black fruit preserves and savory nuances- plum preserves, blackcurrant cordial, black cherry coulis and licorice with wafts of dried lavender, melted chocolate, charcuterie, black olives, truffles and camphor plus a hint of sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is completely filled with black fruits, exotic spices and earthy nuances with a firm foundation of ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. So much more expressive and seductive than a lot of 2010s at this stage, and yet it is still incredibly youthful!
