In 1997 this collector was backpacking through Europe and shared a bottle of 1986 Ramonet Montrachet with a friend and his love of wine began. He started collecting and cellaring wine seriously around the year 2000 and currently has 700+ bottles, mainly old world. He gravitates to the classics of France, Italy and Germany as well as Port. All of the wine was purchased upon release from the LCBO and Ontario wine agents and stored in temperature-controlled wine cabinets. He is selling some of his standard format bottles to make room for recently purchased magnums.
The rating for 2010 Marchesi Antinori Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is 93 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is a well-built wine that shows the muscular side of this celebrated star of Tuscan winemaking. The Brunello opens to a thick, dark appearance with shapely aromas of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, leather dark chocolate and spice. The winemaking is impeccable, if rather stylized in terms of oak and fruit maturity. The aim here is to produce a wine the oozes softness and richness and this goal has been abundantly achieved. Pian delle Vigne is a Brunello that will excel in both the near and long term. The rating for 2010 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is 93 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Tasted from magnum and presented by Baron Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, the 1989 Château Mouton-Rothschild might not reach the ethereal heights of the 1982 or 1986, but it is certainly a lovely Claret. It has an attractive, slightly leafy bouquet armed with cedar and pencil lead. There is less fruit concentration than I expected, resolutely classic, slightly austere Bordeaux. The palate follows suit. What it lacks in substance it compensates with in balance and personality. This is an understated Mouton-Rothschild that is probably at its peak, although I envisage this offering another two decades of pleasure. Whilst this showing did not replicate some glorious bottles in the past, it remains a very fine Claret that may not be inclined to improve any further. Tasted February 2016.
