Wine was always part of family dinners growing up for this Calgary based consignor. He started buying wine in the 1990s through wine clubs like Opimium and through local Calgary liquor stores but has never really considered himself a collector. All wine was stored in a fully insulated cellar, humidity (50-70%) and temperature-controlled (55F) prior to arriving at Iron Gate.
The tasting note for 2011 Spottswoode Estate Vineyard Winery Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon St Helena is from Robert Parker and the score is 93 - Even tasted blind, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is obviously from a cooler vintage, showing some slightly drying, astringent tannins and more herbal notes than usual. The cherry fruit is redder tinged, the tannins less creamy and more pronounced, but one would have to consider this medium to full-bodied wine a solid example of Spottswoode nonetheless, and a huge success in the context of the vintage. This was my first visit to Spottswoode, an impeccably manicured and historic property on the western outskirts of St. Helena that dates back to 1882. The modern-day Spottswoode story dates back to 1972, when Mary and Jack Novak moved north from Southern California and purchased the house and 30 acres of adjacent property. Fifteen adjoining acres were added the following year, and planting grapevines commenced, taking place in 1973 and 1975. Today, there are 37.5 planted acres, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon.
