In the mid 1970’s, a close friend of this consignor invited him and five colleagues to a blind tasting of six wines. This casual gathering led to the creation of L’Ordre des Tirebouchons. The group held monthly tastings, where the host would present six wines to be tasted blind, paired with a gourmet meal of four to five courses. A decade later, to mark their tenth anniversary, they traveled to Paris for a ten-day celebration, indulging in some of the city’s finest restaurants, with a memorable four-and-a-half-hour lunch at Le Pré Catalan standing out as one of the highlights. His passion for wine also led him to tour France on four separate occasions to visit various wineries, along with trips to Australia and South Africa. In 1977, he started to seriously collect wines, maintaining a cellar of over 100 bottles. L’Ordre des Tirebouchons also boasted its own wine cellar, where they sourced prestigious bottles like Château Pétrus and La Tâche. All these wines were acquired through Vintages at the LCBO and stored in a dedicated wine fridge in his basement, ensuring the collection remained in perfect condition.
The rating for 2012 Chateau Montrose St Estephe Deuxieme Grand Cru Classe is 93 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Tasted at the château, the 2012 Montrose is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 24 September and 20 October. It underwent a particularly long maceration period between 26 and 28 days. It offers more fruit intensity than the 2011 Montrose with blackberry, raspberry and bilberry scents, quite backward and primal yet well defined. The aromatics almost mock you because returning after ten minutes, there are glimpses of underlying dried herb and mineral notes. The palate is medium-bodied, intense and very focused, clearly with more depth and sinew than the 2011, yet displaying impressive precision and energy on the finish, which bodes well for the long-term.
The rating for 2012 Chateau Trotanoy Pomerol is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Trotanoy is clearly blossoming in bottle. Over almost 20 years of tasting out of barrel, I cannot recall a Trotanoy that has so surpassed its showing at en primeur. It has a well-defined bouquet that initially seems straightforward. Don't be fooled...it opens in the glass and reveals subtle red berry fruit, truffle and ferrous aromas. There is stunning definition and poise here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is a core of wonderful Cabernet Franc here, the acidity extremely well judged with a precise, sustained finish. This is a sophisticated Pomerol with élan and no more, no less than a fabulous Trotanoy.
