This consignor spent nine years in California where he developed a deep appreciation for their wines. His collecting began modestly in the 1980s while living there, but it wasn’t until he returned to Calgary in the late 90s that he took a more structured approach to acquiring wine. Every bottle of Bordeaux in his consignment was purchased En Primeur through trusted Calgary importers, Nobilis Wines and Richmond Hill Wines, and had remained in his possession since delivery. His collection was meticulously stored in a custom-built, temperature-controlled cellar, designed to house 1,500 bottles with touchpad security. For years, the wines rested in their original wooden crates before he began to enjoy them. His passion for French wines led him to purchase Bordeaux En Primeur annually since 2005, but over time, his collection became heavily weighted toward the region. Recognizing the need for balance, he turned to Irongate to help diversify his holdings.
The rating for 2012 Chateau La Fleur Petrus Pomerol is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 La Fleur Pétrus has a mint-fresh bouquet, vigorous and vivid, with delineated red cherry, raspberry and cassis fruit under which is a strata of wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is a more understated Pomerol but there is real nuance here, black truffle and leather tinging the introspective black fruit. Yet behind that is harmony and finesse, notwithstanding impressive length and sustain. It may be slightly over-shadowed by the sensational Trotanoy, but Pomerol-lovers will lap up this fantastic La Fleur-Petrus from the JP Moueix team.
