His love of wine began in the 1980s through a family friendship with Italian neighbors, sparking a 40-year annual tasting tradition. A wedding gift of a wine fridge started his collection, with a focus on Italian wines—especially Nebbiolo—alongside selections from France, Spain, Chile, and Argentina. Many bottles, including Clos Apalta, Almaviva, and Gianni Brunelli, trace back to those early tastings. A cycling trip in Valpolicella led to a connection with Ben Hodson and a strong focus on Vietti Barolo. He and his wife met Elena and Luca Currado and visited their estate in Castiglione di Falletto. All wines were purchased through reputable agencies, the LCBO, and BC Liquor Stores, and have been carefully stored under ideal conditions. Each was selected to be shared and enjoyed.
The score for 2014 Poderi Aldo Conterno Cicala Bussia Barolo is 94 from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2014 Barolo Bussia Cicala comes from a 3.2-hectare parcel, and only 5,400 bottles are made despite the fact that there is the potential for higher volumes. Both the Cicala and the Romirasco sites are relatively steep and therefore enjoy longer sunlight hours each day of summer for ripe and concentrated fruit. Of these new single-vineyard releases from Poderi Aldo Conterno, Cicala is my top choice in 2014. The wine shows a pure and enduring mouthfeel with salty or saline minerality that makes it such a pleasure to drink. The wine boasts a direct and vertical delivery of aromas, with cassis and dried raspberry that burst to the top with brightness. Cicala is a more direct and focused expression next to Colonnello, which tends to be more broad and horizontal instead. Additional scores for the wine in this lot - James Suckling 95 points , Vinous 94 points , The Wine Advocate 94 points , Wine Spectator 93 points .
