A Toronto-based collector whose passion in wine ignited while dining frequently in the city's restaurants. He then married a woman from France and spent extended periods travelling around the country, tasting wines from all the top regions. All the wines except the magnum of port were bought directly from local importers or the LCBO. Everything was stored from purchase at the Vintage Conservatory in Toronto.
The score for 2019 Domaine Bachelet Monnot Puligny Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru is 93 from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts wafts from he glass with notes of pear, lime, iodine, fresh bread and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with an ample and gourmand core of fruit that's girdled by lively acids and fine structuring extract. Though quantities are down due to frost, the 2019 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Maranges reference-point Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, where brothers Mark and Alexandre preside over a superb portfolio of serious, structured whites and demonstrative, pleasure-bent reds. Farming organically but without certification, the style here continues to evolve - since 2016, grapes have been crushed before pressing, and the brothers now retain more lees. As has been the case for some time now, white wines ferment and mature in 350-liter barrels. Red wine vinifications are gentle and are followed by maturation in modest percentages of new wood. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended.
