A Toronto-based collector whose passion in wine ignited while dining frequently in the city's restaurants. He then married a woman from France and spent extended periods travelling around the country, tasting wines from all the top regions. All the wines except the magnum of port were bought directly from local importers or the LCBO. Everything was stored from purchase at the Vintage Conservatory in Toronto.
The score for 2019 Domaine J F Mugnier Nuits St Georges Clos de la Marechale Premier Cru is 92-96 from Robert Parker and the tasting note - A return to classicism after the hail-impacted 2018, Mugnier's 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is showing beautifully, mingling aromas of cherries and cassis with hints of warm spices, loamy soil and subtle suggestions of the carnal. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and concentrated, with elegantly chalky tannins and bright girdling acids. This tasting with Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier was one of the high points of three months of visits along the Côte d'Or, and the domaine's exquisite 2019 Musigny might just be the wine I covet the most of all those reviewed in this report. The wry and philosophical Mugnier feels that his 2018s—revisited here in bottle—show the stress the vines experienced during the growing season, whereas the 2019s are more irenic. "Depth with joyousness" was how he put it, and I certainly shan't dissent from that characterization of these thrilling, emotion-inducing wines. Combining striking aromatic range, textural sumptuousness and vibrant, mouthwatering freshness, Mugnier's 2019s number among the vintage's very finest wines, and readers should spare neither effort nor expense in acquiring a few bottles if they possibly can.
