A Toronto-based collector whose passion in wine ignited while dining frequently in the city's restaurants. He then married a woman from France and spent extended periods travelling around the country, tasting wines from all the top regions. All the wines except the magnum of port were bought directly from local importers or the LCBO. Everything was stored from purchase at the Vintage Conservatory in Toronto.
The score for 2019 Jean Marc Bouley Volnay Clos des Chenes Premier Cru is 95 from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has turned out especially well. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of raspberries, pomegranate, sweet spices, licorice and rose petals, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, its velvety attack segueing into a deep and voluminous core of fruit that's framed by lively acids and unusually refined tannins for this site. This is one of the most elegant and compelling Clos des Chêne that Bouley has produced to date. Readers looking for in-depth information about this leading Côte de Beaune estate are referred to my feature article on Bouley's emblematic Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers, published in Issue 256 End of August 2021. There, they will find an extensive exposition of why this address ranks as one of contemporary Burgundy's most exciting. On this visit, I looked at Bouley's bottled 2019s, which confirmed their status as one of his finest vintages to date. I'd rank them on the level of Thomas's formidable 2015s, and he agrees, suggesting that while the raw materials in 2015 were even better, he feels that he realized the potential of 2019 even more fully. These are, of course, very fine distinctions - what's much clearer is that, considering the élite quality of the viticulture and winemaking at this address, to say nothing of an enviable palette of appellations, these wines are some of the most underpriced in Burgundy today.
