With over 15 years in the wine and spirits industry, this consignor is a bonafide whisky enthusiast. He is a certified sommelier who has served as a wine and spirits instructor, brand ambassador for several renowned whisky brands in Toronto, and manager of a fine wine and spirits store in Vancouver. Currently, he manages private whisky collections. The bottles in his collection were purchased across Canada, Newfoundland to Victoria, except for some bourbon form the US and a few high-end bottles of whisky from Scotland. He remembers buying the first bottle in October 2008 in Calgary. A pristine collection, that was stored, upright, in wooden cabinets behind closed doors in his basement for 10 years. The four years prior to coming to Iron Gate saw the bottles in closed hard plastic storage boxes in a secured temperature-controlled storage facility in the GTA.
The Ardbeg Kelpie Committee Release, introduced in 2017, represents an innovation in maturation techniques within the whisky industry. This special edition's distinguishing feature is its maturation process in virgin oak casks, harvested from the Adyghe Republic, a region bordering the Black Sea. These exclusive casks have a profound influence on the whisky's flavour, offering a unique twist on the classic Islay spirit. Furthermore, the Committee Release was initially introduced to the members of the Ardbeg Committee during the 2017 Islay Festival. Drawing inspiration from Scottish folklore, the Kelpie Committee Release is named after the mythical water spirits known to lure mariners to their downfall. This whisky showcases a complex maturation process, involving initial ageing in the unique Black Sea oak casks before marrying with the whisky matured in traditional bourbon barrels. This dual maturation process further distinguishes this Ardbeg expression. Marked as a Special Committee Only Edition, this Ardbeg release is primarily reserved for committee members, making it a sought-after collector's item. The Committee Release is presented at natural cask strength of 51.7% ABV, unlike the standard Ardbeg Kelpie which features a lower ABV of 46%. This higher strength offers a more robust and intense flavour profile.
