An Ontario-based consignor who is bringing her late husband’s collection to auction. He started collecting in his 20s and loved everything about wine, buying, drinking, cooking, reading and especially getting together with the members of his wine group to discuss bottles. He purchased through the LCBO, some agents and through auction. All bottles were stored in their wine fridge, at a constant temperature of 56 degrees and away from bright light.
The rating for 2001 Chateau Calon Segur St Estephe is 90 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - I suspect this 2001 will shut down (as most young Calon-Segurs do), although it appears more forward and evolved than the huge, backward, but totally dormant 2000. The plum/ruby-colored 2001 reveals aromas of damp earth, cranberries, cherries, herbs, and forest floor. While lighter than its older sibling, it is medium-bodied, elegant, and should emerge from its post-bottling sleep in 4-5 years, and drink well for 14-15. Think of it as a lighter-weight 1988 (one of the stars of the vintage).
The rating for 2005 Chateau Pipeau St Emilion Grand Cru is 90 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - A reliably exciting value in St.-Emilion from proprietor Mestreguilhem, Pipeau always seems to hit high on the hedonistic scale of pleasure bombs. The ruby/purple 2005 has loads of fruit, although not a great deal of complexity, but it is round, juicy and succulent, with no hard edges. This medium to full-bodied, well-made, fruit-driven wine should be drunk over the next 5-7 years. It is a sleeper of the vintage.
The rating for 2005 Chateau Branaire Ducru St Julien is 93 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Floral nuances combined with lots of mulberry, raspberry and sweet blackcurrant fruit are followed by a medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, textured, complex wine with soft tannin. It should drink well relatively early on (2-3 years) and last 15 or more.
