Moutai, a type of baijiu, is a traditional Chinese distilled spirit made from sorghum. Originating from Maotai in Guizhou Province, it is produced by Kweichow Moutai Co. The process includes open fermentation, repeated distillation over months, and aging in clay vessels, creating its unique flavour profile. Moutai, often referred to as China's "national liquor," holds significant cultural importance. It is customarily served at state banquets and diplomatic gatherings, representing prestige and hospitality. Notably, Premier Zhou Enlai utilized Moutai in state toasts during visits by foreign dignitaries, including U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1972. The origins of Moutai can be traced back over 2,000 years. Moutai is considered valuable by collectors for its historical, cultural, and quality attributes.
Nose- Aromatic and complex, presenting notes of fermented grains, aged soy, and sesame. Subtle hints of dried fruits, including apricot and plum, are present. Earthy and floral undertones accompany nuances of sandalwood and aged oak.
Palate- Full-bodied with umami, savory notes balanced by sweetness. Layers of roasted nuts, caramelized sugar, herbs, and a hint of white pepper and anise spice.
Finish- Long, smooth, and warming with dried fruit, soy, and a touch of minerality. A delicate smokiness completes the experience.
