This prestigious collection comes to Iron Gate from a revered connoisseur and long-time wine collector. Lover of American wines, he spent many years sourcing them from some of the USA's finest properties and had them stored professionally at 55 Degrees in Napa Valley. Recognizing his cellar had grown far beyond what he could reasonably consume, he's brought the wines to auction to share with fellow enthusiasts.
The score for 2007 Massolino Barolo Serralunga d Alba is 94 points from Wine Spectator and the tasting note - Warm and inviting, featuring macerated cherry, leather, tobacco and spice flavors. The balance leans toward the tannic side, yet this shows an extra level of ripeness and integration, with excellent length. The score for 1999 Moccagatta Bric Balin Barbaresco is 92 points from Vinous and the tasting note - The 1999 Barbaresco Bric Balin is striking today. The Bric Balin is quite a bit fresher than the Basarin, but also a bit more medium in body and more refined. Tobacco, dried flowers, anise and sweet dried herbs are some of the nuances that add complexity as the wine sits in the glass. The June 14 hailstorm lowered production a whopping 50%, but the wine has held up beautifully, even if the tannins are likely to retain a certain element of firmness.
