Growing up in the Western Cape of South Africa, this consignor always had a deep interest in wine, though access to great bottles was limited. Around 2009/2010, he began collecting wine on a modest budget. His collection grew primarily through the LCBO programs, but he also made it a point to bring back a bottle or two of the prestigious Vine de Constance every time he visited South Africa. All his wines are carefully stored in his purpose-built cellar, designed with both temperature and humidity control for optimal preservation.
The rating for 2008 Chateau Leoville Barton St Julien is 92 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Typically extracted and powerful (which is atypical in a vintage such as 2008), this offering may lack charm, but it is “locked and loaded” with plenty of background oak, huge black cherry and black currant fruit, medium to full body and a boatload of tannin. Forget it for 8-10 years and drink it over the following three decades.
The rating for 2009 Chateau Leoville Barton St Julien is 94 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 Leoville Barton gives up expressive cherry cordial, warm cassis and blackberry tart scents with nuances of menthol, cigar box and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied and elegantly played with loads of freshness and soft tannins, it has a long, perfumed finish. The rating for 2012 Chateau Leoville Barton St Julien is 92 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Dense ruby/purple, with cassis licorice and forest floors notes in the aromatics, Léoville-Barton’s 2012 is a relatively big, rich, masculine style of wine. This full-bodied wine needs 5-8 years of cellaring and should evolve easily for 25-30 years.
