Growing up in the Western Cape of South Africa, this consignor always had a deep interest in wine, though access to great bottles was limited. Around 2009/2010, he began collecting wine on a modest budget. His collection grew primarily through the LCBO programs, but he also made it a point to bring back a bottle or two of the prestigious Vine de Constance every time he visited South Africa. All his wines are carefully stored in his purpose-built cellar, designed with both temperature and humidity control for optimal preservation.
The rating for 2015 Chateau Leoville Barton St Julien is 95 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Leoville Barton offers up notions of warm red currants, black raspberries and dark chocolate with wafts of cigar box, violets and bay leaves. Elegant, medium-bodied and sporting great freshness, the taut, tightly wound palate of intense red fruits and floral accents is well-framed with firm, grainy tannins, finishing on a lingering mineral note.
The rating for 2016 Chateau Leoville Barton St Julien is 97 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - A brilliant young wine, the 2016 Léoville Barton unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries and cigar box mingled with subtle hints of loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's seamless and exquisitely balanced, with beautifully refined tannins, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish. Its structural refinement is such that it's far from forbidding to open right now, yet patience will be richly rewarded. The rating for 2019 Chateau Leoville Barton St Julien is 97 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Like its stablemate Langoa Barton, the 2019 Léoville Barton is a timeless classic, made for patient connoisseurs. Offering up aromas of blackcurrants, plums, pencil shavings and licorice, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its deep core of fruit framed by a chassis of rich, powdery tannin that makes itself felt on the youthfully firm finish. While it's clearly built for the long haul, its structural seamlessness and mid-palate plenitude mark it out as one of the finest wines from this château in recent times. Could it be a more concentrated modern-day version of Anthony Barton's brilliant 1985?
