A passionate and seasoned collector from Toronto, who has been buying fine wine since 1978. He purchased his first case of Mouton Rothschild and Chateau Latour at the vintage store in Ottawa and many bottles through the SAQ. He and his wife love traveling to wine regions in France and Italy and they acquired numerous bottles during their journeys. After downsizing to a smaller space, he decided to reduce his collection, hoping it will find a new owner who will appreciate it as much as he has. The collection was kept in his temperature-controlled cellar before going to auction.
The score for 1989 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is 97 points from Decanter and the tasting note - An extremely early year for the property, with harvest from 6-25 September. One to savour, it has the signature smoked, toasted glamour of Mouton, with cappuccino, crushed bilberry and blackberries, pliable tannins, and a drawn-out finish that gets better and better in the glass. The label, by the way, featured Georg Baselitz, a German painter, to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The tasting note for 1987 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is from Robert Parker - This would appear to be a sure bet for the wine of the vintage. Certainly, it is the most complete and backward 1987, with at least 10-15 years of aging potential. The touching dedication from the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild's daughter on the label is almost worth the price of one bottle. Additionally, 1987 was the last vintage of the Baron, and thus will probably fetch a fortune in 40 or 50 years. This is one of the deepest and most opaque wines of the vintage, with a tight, yet promising bouquet of cedar and black currants. This wine exhibits surprising depth, medium to full body, and plenty of tannin in the finish.
The score for 1988 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is 18.5/20 points from Jancis Robinson and the tasting note - Nuanced ruby colour. Dense, spicy, exotic nose with definite ingredient X. Not rich but very pure and very Mouton with its grace notes of warm flint stones. Long and nuanced. Really appetising and aristocratic.
