This consignor was raised by parents who always opened a bottle of wine with dinner, and he fondly remembers Gruaud-Larose. His early interest developed into a passion in 1993. Around that time, he was in Bordeaux and had heard of Chateau Margaux, so he went there, climbed the steps and rang the bell, and they granted him a visit. He started collecting that day and purchased 1990 Chateau Margaux in the village for $80 a bottle. He then started buying more wine, participated in wine events, traveled to several wine producing regions on many occasions and even got married at Château Smith Haut-Lafitte. He purchased mainly from SAQ, LCBO but also from Berry Bros and Rudd, Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa and directly from importers for certain rare wines. He has also managed to get allocations directly from some producers including Harlan, Sine Qua Non, Kosta Browne and Williams Selyem. The bottles were all stored in a temperature-controlled cellar prior to auction.
The scores for 1983 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac - Wine Spectator - 94, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy - 94, John Kapon Vintage Tastings - 94, James Suckling - 93, Tom Cannavan - 93, Vinous - 92, CellarTracker - 92. The rating for 1983 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is 90 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The classic Mouton lead-pencil, cedary nose has begun to emerge. This medium dark ruby, elegant, medium-bodied wine will never be a great or legendary Mouton. The flavors are ripe and moderately rich. With good depth and some firm tannins to resolve, this offering from Mouton is bigger and richer than the 1981, 1979, or 1978. Austere by the standards of Mouton and the vintage, the 1983 resembles the chateau's fine 1966. The scores for 1984 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac - Wine Spectator - 92. Producer notes for 1984 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac - Château Mouton Rothschild is located in the commune of Pauillac, in the Medoc, 30 miles (50km) northwest of the city of Bordeaux. The grand vin is among the most highly rated and priced wines in the world, and is generally regarded as the most exuberant and powerful of all Bordeaux. It was famously added to the First Growths set out in the 1855 Classification in 1973. The estate comprises 84 hectares (207 acres) of vineyards, mainly on gravel-based soils, and is situated in the northern part of the commune just south of Château Lafite Rothschild. Most of the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (80 percent), with 16 percent planted to Merlot as well as small plots of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The portion of each variety vinified into the grand vin depends on the vintage but will always be Cabernet Sauvignon dominant thanks to variety's rich content of supple tannins. The scores for 1985 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac - The Wine Advocate - 95, Jeannie Cho Lee (formerly Asian Palate) - 95,Falstaff Magazine - 94, Decanter - 93, CellarTracker - 93. The rating for 1985 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac is 90 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The rich, complex, well-developed bouquet of oriental spices, toasty oak, herbs, and ripe fruit is wonderful. On the palate, the wine is also rich, forward, long, and sexy. It ranks behind both Haut-Brion and Chateau Margaux in 1985. I am surprised by how evolved and ready to drink this wine is. Readers looking for a big, boldly constructed Mouton should search out other vintages, as this is a tame, forward, medium-weight wine that is close to full maturity. It is capable of lasting another 15+ years. This estate compares their 1985 to their 1959, but to me it is more akin to their 1962 or 1953.
