A collector for over forty years, the consignor's interest was sparked by a 1981 tasting of Clos de Tart, leading him to start his collection the very next year. About 98% of his cellar was bought right at release, including a large selection of Bordeaux futures. He sourced these through the ALCB before 1994 and from premier private retailers in Alberta ever since. The wines have been kept in a custom, insulated 50-square-foot cellar, cooled to a steady 12°C. To ensure they stayed in great shape, he used a remote monitoring system to keep a constant eye on both temperature and humidity.
This is the tasting note for 1987 Chateau Palmer Margaux from Robert Parker - The 1987 Palmer is a star of the vintage in the Margaux appellation. It is a splendidly ripe, nearly opulent wine, exhibiting a great deal of toasty new oak, low acidity, excellent color, and medium body. No doubt the high percentage of Merlot used by Palmer worked to their advantage in this charming, deliciously fruity wine. . 1990 Chateau Palmer Margaux from this lot has the following scores - The Wine Advocate 92 points, Wine Spectator 92 points, CellarTracker 92 points. This is the tasting note for 1990 Chateau Palmer Margaux from Robert Parker - Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, I confess that maybe I've been harsh towards the 1990 Château Palmer in the past, since it never quite matched the sublime 1989. However, this represents the finest bottle that I have encountered. The nose is complex with red cherries, allspice and sous-bois, tertiary scents developing as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance, not the most complex 1990 and not a patch on say Château Margaux 1990, yet there is precision here and a pleasant savory finish that maintains precision. I cannot envisage it improving further, but you would not throw your rattle out of the pram if a bottle landed on your table. . 1989 Chateau Palmer Margaux from this lot has the following scores - Vinous 97 points, The Wine Advocate 97 points, Falstaff Magazine 96 points, Jeff Leve The Wine Cellar Insider 96 points, Wine Spectator 95 points. This is the tasting note for 1989 Chateau Palmer Margaux from Robert Parker - Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1989 Château Palmer has always been my favourite vintage from that decade after the 1983. The first bottle was unfortunately corked. The second was as it should be - the nose tensile with red berries, sous-bois, potpourri and strawberry pastille - lively and energetic. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant right from the start, silky in texture with plenty of citrus fruit, gently building to a harmonious and detailed finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a magnificent Château Palmer that continues to effortlessly dish out so much vinous pleasure. 1991 Chateau Palmer Margaux from this lot has the following scores - CellarTracker 92 points. This is the tasting note for 1991 Chateau Palmer Margaux from Robert Parker - Palmer's 1991 is a noteworthy effort. The deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of ripe black fruits and new oak. There is excellent definition, a sweet, creamy, medium to full-bodied texture, noticeable fatness, and a lush, concentrated, rich finish. This seductive, hedonistic 1991 should drink well for 7-10 years. 1986 Chateau Palmer Margaux from this lot has the following scores - Wine Spectator 94 points, The Wine Advocate 92 points, CellarTracker 92 points. This is the tasting note for 1986 Chateau Palmer Margaux from Robert Parker - Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1986 Château Palmer might not embrace you like the 1985, and yet it remains a Margaux with pedigree. It offers blackcurrant pastilles, raspberry and cedar on the nose, violets unfurling with time in the glass, guiding the drinker to its appellation of origin. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced, as expected, more austere and reserved than the 1985, but with fine backbone and an attractive masculine, tobacco-infused finish that is precise and long. It is not in the same class as the 1989, but it has clearly reached its drinking plateau and should continue there for at least another decade. 1988 Chateau Palmer Margaux from this lot has the following scores - Wine Spectator 90 points, CellarTracker 90 points. This is the tasting note for 1988 Chateau Palmer Margaux from James Suckling - Aromas of coffee bean, tobacco and plum follow through to a full body, with chewy tannins and a long finish. A little rustic, but rich and youthful. Chewy. It would be better with a bit more bottle age, but why bother? .
