Growing up in the Western Cape of South Africa, this consignor always had a deep interest in wine, though access to great bottles was limited. Around 2009/2010, he began collecting wine on a modest budget. His collection grew primarily through the LCBO programs, but he also made it a point to bring back a bottle or two of the prestigious Vine de Constance every time he visited South Africa. All his wines are carefully stored in his purpose-built cellar, designed with both temperature and humidity control for optimal preservation.
The rating for 2013 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2013 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine was matured in 500-liter barrels for around 36 months. It has a beautiful bouquet with honey, quince, pressed yellow flowers and Mirabelle. It has wonderful definition and purity. The palate is very well balanced with a mellifluous texture and beautifully judged acidity as it just sashays along. It fans out on the finish with honey, quince, a touch of rhubarb and ginger, extraordinarily persistent in the mouth. Matthew Day, current winemaker, opined that he thought the 2012 would be the best ever, but the freshness might see it overtaken. This is awesome. The rating for 2018 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Bright, floral and fresh, the 2018 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine presents a nose full of focused fruits with power and precision while possessing a beautiful balance of flowers and stone fruit aromas. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is not overly sweet but harmonious and seductively pleasurable. Bright acidity paired with a perfect sparring partner of succulent sweetness duel for attention before ending with a long, ever-evolving, spicy finish that has me coming back for more. I'm not spitting any of this out.
The rating for 2019 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is 96 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Floral, focused and sweet, the 2019 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine bursts out of the glass with layers of picturesque sweet citrus and stone fruit purée. The palate possesses a brilliant balance between succulent, sweet fruit flavors and layers of complexity that sway with focus and finesse, power and prestige. Gobs of sweet citrus and white peach are on display with attractive, healthy fruit, showing an impeccable balance between residual sugar and energetic acidity. This beauty will last for decades and has me dreaming of aged soft blue cheeses.
The rating for 2020 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is 97 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Classic and expressive with seductive aromas of marmalade and honeysuckle, the 2020 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine is fresh, balanced and complex, offering a delightful lift from 60% new oak. Clocking in at 13.5% alcohol, the palate displays a harmonious balance between fruit sweetness and energetic acidity. It has layers of complexity with impeccable breadth and depth. It may be one of the finest expressions of Vin de Constance to date, and it ends with succulent flavors of apricots, saffron, quince paste and sweet candied citrus tones over the long, ever-evolving finish. Aged for a year and a half in 50% new Hungarian and French oak barrels, followed by an additional year and a half of large format wooden foudre, only the best lots end up being selected for the final blend. Bravo! Run, don’t walk to buy this world-class sweet wine to put in your cellar!
