The score for 2004 Philip Togni Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is 95+ points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, comes from steep mountain vineyards at the top of the Napa side of Spring Mountain. Aromas of black olives, tapenade, creme de cassis, licorice and truffles emerge from this opaque ruby/purple-colored, youthful 2004. Togni’s spiritual reference point is Bordeaux more than Napa Valley, and his wines seem to represent a hypothetical melange of those two distinctive schools of wine. Still backward, but rich, full-bodied and promising, this brilliant 2004 is 5-7 years away from its adolescence- it should age for 30-40 years. The iconic “mountain man,” Philip Togni has made many great wines that have clearly stood the test of time. The oldest vintages I have in my cellar go back to the mid-eighties, and I always recommend that purchasers of Togni’s wines forget them for at least ten years.
"The score for 2003 Philip Togni Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is 95+ points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. For those who don’t know, Togni has always made an uncompromising Cabernet meant for 20, 30, maybe even 40 or more years of cellaring. Gorgeously rich notes of black olives, black currants, graphite and wood smoke jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored, Medoc-styled 2003. At age ten, it displays a youthfulness similar to a 4- to 5-year-old wine. The finish is long, convincing and rich. It is reminiscent of a Spring Mountain version of a hybrid blend of St.-Julien and Pauillac. Unique to Napa and as distinctive as Philip Togni himself, it will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring and should last longer than your author. By the way, my cellar includes many vintages of Togni, and I rarely touch them before they hit 15 years of age.
The great Philip Togni, the Ancient Mariner, or should I say mountain goat, has made brilliant Cabernet Sauvignons at Chappellet (try their 1969), Cuvaison (try their 1975) and at his own estate. One of Napa Valley’s most admirable senior citizens, he reminds me of Robert Redford in the fabulous movie, Jeremiah Johnson – not likely to ever come down from the mountain, preferring to look over his grapes and remain in wonderful solitude with one of the great views in Napa Valley."
The score for 2005 Philip Togni Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is 92+ points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is a more closed and restrained style of wine, with firm tannins, Bordeaux-like austerity, but dense ruby/purple with notes of menthol, black currant liqueur, coffee, and a hint of olive. The wine is full-bodied, youthful, tannic, and a promising candidate for long-term cellaring. In fact this kind of vintage at Togni generally means laying the wine away for at least a decade, which is always good advice here. This may be a 30- to 40-year Togni Cabernet Sauvignon.
