Growing up in the Okanagan Valley, this Calgary-based consignor was immersed in wine from a young age. He worked in the hospitality industry during summers while attending university and completed several courses and certifications in wine. He began collecting wine approximately eight years ago, sourcing bottles through AGLC, BCL, and LCBO. He also traveled several times to the USA and Europe, always bringing bottles back with him or arranging for delivery. His collection is stored in temperature-controlled fridges.
The rating for 1992 Sassicaia Bolgheri is 91+ points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The 1992 Sassicaia is another member of that restricted group of lesser vintages that delivers surprising results today. I am delighted to find a few of these exceptional surprises in this historic retrospective of Sassicaia. None of these wines, including this vintage, had previously been reviewed by Robert Parker Wine Advocate. This effort from 1992 plays its strongest cards in the mouth. The bouquet is rather muted and predictable with a solid offering of tertiary licorice, tar and dark fruit aromas. But in the mouth, this wine exhibits impressive finesse and a menthol and balsam-herb finish that lasts for many long minutes. Those silky sensations go on and on. This wine is a risk worth taking. The rating for 1993 Sassicaia Bolgheri is from Robert Parker and the tasting note - A tannic, stern, austerely-styled Sassicaia, the 1993 reveals a dark ruby/purple color, followed by attractive cassis fruit with weedy tobacco and herbs in the background. New oak is present, but not intrusive. The wine is medium-bodied, with high tannin, good acidity, and a firm, structured feel on the palate. Producer notes for 1994 Sassicaia Bolgheri - Tenuta San Guido is much better known by the name of its most famous wine – Sassicaia. It is located in the Tuscan region of Maremma, and is has its own single-estate DOC appellation (Bolgheri Sassicaia) applied to its flagship label. Sassicaia, one of the original Super Tuscan wines, is made up of Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Cabernet Franc. It is known for its supple texture, elegance and perfume. The grapes that go into Sassicaia are picked just before they reach full ripeness, which contributes to finesse and fragrance as well as a lower alcohol levels. After two weeks' fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged for around 24 months in French oak barrels (around 20 percent of which are new). The scores for 1995 Sassicaia Bolgheri - Decanter - 94, Winedoctor - 94, CellarTracker - 92. The rating for 1996 Sassicaia Bolgheri is 92 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Here's a little gem from Tenuta San Guido that has never been reviewed in Robert Parker Wine Advocate (except informally by me one year ago in a Hedonist's Gazette). I have consistently found the 1996 Bolgheri Sassicaia to be an impressive wine on the few occasions I have had to taste it. This is one of those rare underrated vintages that bring so much delight and surprise in an important retrospective such as this. As I recall from my informal tasting, this Sassicaia shows a heavy dose of Cabernet Sauvignon typicity but without the astringent medicinal tone or unripe greenness you might expect. Instead, it delivers a bright but balanced, tonic verve that is driven by the wine's natural acidity. I had previously paired this wine with an oversized bistecca alla fiorentina t-bone steak and the marriage was perfect. This was a difficult vintage in Bolgheri, but the results in the bottle suggest otherwise.
