The consignor has been building his cellar since 1979, a journey sparked by extensive travel throughout the old-world wine regions. His acquisition strategy was informed by a network of industry insiders and connoisseurs, including the former Canadian manager of the American Express Connoisseurs Group, as well as the proprietor of International Wine in Vancouver. Notable highlights of the collection include two bottles of 1986 Château Lafite Rothschild, sourced directly from the estate of Baron Guy de Rothschild’s sister, a friend of the collector’s daughter.
1989 Chateau Margaux from this lot has the following scores - Wine Spectator 97 points, Decanter 97 points, Jeannie Cho Lee (formerly Asian Palate) 96 points, The Wine Advocate 95 points, Jean-Marc Quarin 95 points, Adrian van Velsen - vvWine.ch 95 points. This is the tasting note for 1989 Chateau Margaux from Robert Parker - Dwarfed by its younger sibling, the 1990, the 1989 Chateau Margaux has a dark plum/garnet color and a big, sweet nose of new saddle leather, toasty oak, and weedy black cherry and cassis fruit. The wine is medium-bodied, with relatively elevated tannins, outstanding concentration and purity, but a somewhat clipped as well as compressed finish. This certainly outstanding wine has put on a bit of weight in its evolution in the bottle, but it is hardly one of the most profound efforts from Chateau Margaux.
