This prestigious collection comes to Iron Gate from a revered connoisseur and long-time wine collector. Lover of American wines, he spent many years sourcing them from some of the USA's finest properties and had them stored professionally at 55 Degrees in Napa Valley. Recognizing his cellar had grown far beyond what he could reasonably consume, he's brought the wines to auction to share with fellow enthusiasts.
The rating for 2009 Epoch Estate Wines Tempranillo Paderewski Vineyard is 95 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - A real Wow wine, the 2009 Epoch Estate Wines Tempranillo Paderewski Vineyard, 100% Tempranillo that was aged for 23 months in 75% new French oak, sports knockout aromatics of black cherry and blackberry fruit, graphite, cedar, dried earth, and thrilling levels of spice and meaty characteristics on the nose. This full-bodied, perfectly put together wine has a firm, focused texture, awesome tannin structure, good acidity, and a very long, focused finish. Gorgeous stuff and while the lack of a track record has me backing off the upper end of the drink window, I don't see any reason this won't age for 12-15 years or more. The rating for 2010 Epoch Tempranillo is 93+ points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - Lastly, the massive and backwards 2010 Tempranillo is loaded with decadent notes of black fruits, chocolate, licorice and smoked meats, with more spice, cedar and dried flower notes developing with time in the glass. Easily the most concentrated, rich, chewy and structured, it needs to be forgotten for another 2-3 years, at which point it should be fully mature and keep beautifully through 2025. The rating for 2012 Epoch Estates Grenache Sensibility is 93 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - 2012 was the first in a streak of warm drought years in California, and winemaker Jordan Fiorentini says she began backing off on the use of whole cluster after this vintage. It was also one of the first years she started to employ some fermentation in concrete, and the purity of the Epoch wines ticks up in this vintage. The use of concrete, she notes, is a cool play on that warm vintage. The 2012 Sensibility Grenache, from the Paderewski and Catapult vineyards, was harvested September 27-29 and fermented in concrete tanks. It was made with 40% whole cluster and aged 16 months in concrete eggs and neutral puncheons. Medium ruby, it's drinking beautifully right now, with concentrated scents of red and black cherries, dried flowers, dark spices, forest floor and coffee beans. The palate is supple and silky, uplifted and floral, and it finishes with lovely perfume. It's drinking beautifully right now and will continue to hold in bottle another 5-8 years. 274 cases were made.
