A collector, based in Toronto, became interested in wine while visiting his father-in-law in Hong Kong over 60 years ago. He also owned a restaurant that had an impressive wine list and was was able to visit many wineries throughout France. He continued collecting after selling the restaurant with most of his bottles purchased upon release from the LCBO. He took meticulous care of his wine, labeling many of the bottles and storing them in a temperature and humidity controlled cellar in his home.
The score for1999 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape is 92 from Robert Parker and this is the tasting note -More fresh and focused, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape is an elegant, classically-styled effort that offers textbook garrigue, pepper, smoked meats and currant bud-like qualities on both the nose and palate. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and balanced, it’s drinking at point, but will continue to evolve gradually. Another bastillion of traditional Chateauneuf du Pape, Vieux Donjon is owned by Lucien and Marie Jose Michel, with the winemaking now firmly in the hands of their talented daughter, Claire Michel. They produce a single red and white Chateauneuf du Pape, with the red always a rough blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and the balance a mix of other permitted varieties. They started partial destemming in 1993, pulling out the green stems and keeping the more lignified stems. Aging occurs all in concrete tanks and older foudre. This was a fabulous tasting with both Claire and her brother Francois, and as I hope the notes show, the wines have classic Chateauneuf du Pape character and broad drink windows.
The score for2000 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape is 91 from Robert Parker and this is the tasting note -The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape represents an educational tour of the southern Rhone, in particular, Chateauneuf du Pape. It possesses all the appellation's classic components ... underbrush, garrigue, licorice, pepper, lavender, sweet black cherries, and incense. Extremely perfumed and heady, this full-bodied, moderately tannic offering comes close to matching the mass and blockbuster power of the 1998. Firm tannin in the finish suggests a long aging curve. Given my experience with Vieux Donjon, most of the classic vintages hit their peak at 7-8 years, where they remain for 5-6 years. Around age 15-16 they begin a slow decline. The 2000 should follow that path. One of the classic Chateauneuf du Papes of the appellation, the proprietor (the Michel family) makes an uncompromising, long-lived wine that is remarkably consistent from vintage to vintage. My buying history with this estate goes back two decades, and I have enjoyed virtually every vintage I have purchased. At present, I'm working my way through the last of my 1985s and 1990s, and then I'll attack the 1995s, and in a few years, the extraordinary 1998s.
The score for2001 Le Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape is 95 from Robert Parker and this is the tasting note -The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape is a beauty! Classic and textbook in style, with ample cured meats, earth, herbs and mature currant and blackberry fruit, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, a gorgeous texture and serious length. It’s drinking beautifully now, but will continue to shine through 2021.
