In the early 90s, this consignor’s interest in wine began when they attended a two-week wine class in Bordeaux, followed by a six-week tour through various wine regions in France. During this time, they also started collecting wines. The following year, they toured Italy and purchased many wines. Around 2000, they began working for a high-end, USA-based restaurant company, taking on the roles of manager and wine consultant for several of its outlets. They lead a group of 20 VIPs on a five-day tour of Napa and Sonoma every three months, where they introduced the group to winemakers and winery owners, including Robert Mondavi and Jack and Delores Cakebread. Most of the French wines in their collection were purchased and shipped directly from France, while their California wines were primarily acquired from the LCBO and USA-based wineries. All wines are stored in a temperature-controlled environment with no light or movement.
The rating for 1994 Opus One Napa Valley is 92 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - This is an impressive effort from Opus One. The wine, a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Malbec, possesses a dark ruby/purple color, followed by a generous, complex nose of lead pencil, toasty oak, violets, and black currants. In the mouth, there is a beautiful texture, soft, generous, low acid, full-bodied richness, and a stunningly proportioned, rich, intense finish. The influence of 18 months in new French oak casks gives the wine a subtle oaky note in addition to giving it excellent delineation. Because of the wine's softness and generosity, it can be drunk now as well as over the next 18-20 years. The rating for 1995 Opus One Napa Valley is 95 points from Wine Spectator and the tasting note - A shade more elegant and refined than the '94, yet sharing the delicious range of flavors, with bright black cherry, plum and floral notes. Turns smooth and polished. The rating for 1996 Opus One Napa Valley is 94 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - This is one of the finest Opus Ones to date, offering a dark ruby/purple color, as well as a striking, intense bouquet of sweet licorice intermixed with blackberries, cassis, plums, and saddle leather. This seamless, full-bodied wine is more velvety-textured, opulent, and succulent than past vintages. The mid-palate is expansive and chewy. The long finish is filled with glycerin, ripe fruit, and sweet tannin. Drink this impressive, user-friendly yet richly concentrated effort over the next 15 years.
