This prestigious collection comes to Iron Gate from a revered connoisseur and long-time wine collector. Lover of American wines, he spent many years sourcing them from some of the USA's finest properties and had them stored professionally at 55 Degrees in Napa Valley. Recognizing his cellar had grown far beyond what he could reasonably consume, he's brought the wines to auction to share with fellow enthusiasts.
The rating for 2011 Brewer Clifton Chardonnay 3D is 91 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - More complex, with leafy herbs, green and tropical fruit, mint and floral notes, the 2011 Chardonnay 3-D is pure, fleshy and supple in the mouth, with a great mid-palate and racy acidity defining the finish. There’s nice overall tension and energy here and it should be even better in another year. A benchmark estate in the Santa Rita Hills, these first rate efforts are made by Steve Clifton and Greg Brewer. The wines are all handled identically in the cellar, so what you get is exactly what the vineyard delivers. In addition, this estate is moving to only estate-farmed vineyards, with Gnesa, Machado, 3-D and Hapgood being the only single-vineyard releases going forward. These 2011s are fantastic and should not be missed!
The rating for 2012 Melville Chardonnay Clon 76 InoxSta Rita Hills is 91 points from Robert Parker and the tasting note - The best vintage of the cuvee to date, Melville’s 2013 Chardonnay Clone 76 Inox comes all from the estate vineyard (Melville) and was aged 6 months in stainless steel barrels. It has classy citrus, white peach and clean minerality to go with a medium-bodied, rich and nicely textured feel on the palate. While I normally find this cuvee borderline too lean, I love the texture here. It should put on even more weight with another 6-12 months in bottle as well.
